Biography: Sarah is the kind of math nerd who has baked a golden spiral loaf of Fibonacci bread, layer cake solids of revolution, and a pi-day pie with a unit circle lattice top. Though her students have been known to describe her enthusiasm for the subject as “kinda weird”, they usually are willing to indulge her if snacks are involved. Over the years, Sarah has taught nearly every math course from 7th grade to advanced calculus. Her particular interests as a math educator include standards-based and growth-focused assessment models, finding new ways to prioritize data literacy in the curriculum, and the development of class cultures specifically designed to reduce stereotype threat for female, queer, and BIPOC students. New to SAAS in 2024, Sarah has served Seattle-area students as a math teacher and school administrator for over 20 years. Most recently, she was one of the founding co-heads of school at the (now-defunct) Hatch School, which provided a community-driven, personalized, and rigorous high school program centering girls. Outside of school, you might find Sarah getting swole at the gym where she is an aspiring powerlifter, making lopsided coffee cups on a pottery wheel, baking (mostly non-mathematical) sweets, or roundly defeating her children Hank and Freddie at MarioKart.
