Biography:
Alison Ray is our Dean of Teaching and Learning and has worked at Seattle Academy since 2007, first as an Upper School English teacher and later as the English Department Chair and (from 2016-2021) the Dean of Faculty for Humanities. Prior to SAAS, Alison served as Department Chair at Escuela Americana in San Salvador, El Salvador, where she worked to improve teaching and learning nationally and taught courses including Advanced Placement Language and Rhetoric and English 9. Alison started her career in the Seattle Public Schools and earned her Masters in Teaching from the University of Washington.
As Dean of Teaching and Learning at SAAS, Alison works with faculty — including early career teachers in our newly developed Associate Program — on mission-aligned curriculum and instruction.
Currently, she is working to develop an instructional coaching initiative, hosting professional learning conversations about trauma-informed practices, and facilitating workshops for faculty to define a cohesive approach to equitable grading.
