In August 2024, Seattle Academy alumnae Olivia Miller ’17 and Bella Feinstein ’15 made their mark on the Seattle art scene by opening a photography exhibit in Pioneer Square. The show, titled On-Going: A Group Photography Show, exclusively featured the work of 15 photographers with ties to Seattle, drawing inspiration from the spirit and conversations of the Seattle Fine Art Society.
After completing their studies on the East Coast and returning to their hometown, Bella and Olivia wanted to reconnect with Seattle's art community and contribute something meaningful.
“Bella and I both moved back to Seattle after spending some time on the East Coast for college and traveling as well,” Olivia shared. “We started having conversations about the art community here and how we wanted to collaborate on a project.”
With distinct professional backgrounds, the pair found common ground in their passion for creativity. Yet, re-establishing themselves in the local art world posed challenges after being away for several years.
“We both have different backgrounds, but we shared a passion for the arts and were struggling to find a foothold again in Seattle. This space came about very organically,” explained Bella.
Their opportunity arose when they discovered a space in Pioneer Square that they believed was perfect for showcasing the work of 15 photographers. The venue, known for rotating monthly exhibitions, had an August slot available, which the duo quickly secured.
“The space rotates monthly with different group shows. We asked if they had August available and they did, so within a very short timeframe, we put together this group of 15 artists,” Bella said.
Among the featured artists were four fellow SAAS alumni: Jackson Chihuly '16, Kelsey Malone '16, Lucia Rosenast '19, and Lily Vogt '16.
“We wanted this show to represent Seattle, and we wanted to represent our friends who are emerging artists and whose careers we really want to champion,” Bella explained.
The two alumnae's roots in the Seattle Academy arts program had a lasting impact on them. Bella reflected on the influence SAAS had on her creative journey: “I would say the spirit of SAAS and its commitment to collaboration and creativity has always stayed with me. I think coming back to Seattle has been about trying to find that spark again.”
For Olivia, this project marked a new phase in her artistic career. “This is a new and different professional venture for me, being in a physical space and dealing with photographs. I’ve learned a lot about curating a space, how to communicate with people in their different practices, and also how to tell a story that everyone can get on board with, that’s been something we’ve done collaboratively.”
The collaboration between the artists was evident not only in the work they presented but also in their process. “The art all speaks so loudly and differently,” Bella said. “It’s so fun to watch everyone navigate the adult world as a creative. Everyone has a different approach, and they’re all so unique.”
Olivia expressed her gratitude for the partnership: “We have made a great team,” she said with a smile, pointing to Bella. “Bella has such a knowledge of photography, darkroom techniques, and documentary film. I’ve learned so much from her, and it’s been a great collaboration between the two of us. I’m grateful to have her alongside this project.”
