SAAS Athletics: Summer Updates

Dear SAAS Community,

We hope the summer is treating you well! Believe it or not, the new school year is just around the corner. As we gear up for another year of Cardinal sports, we wanted to share some exciting updates.

IT'S GO TIME!

We are in the Metro League: In our previous communication, we provided a status update on our admission into the Metro League (which begins this fall). We are excited to join this storied league with over 120 years of success on the athletic fields and courts, all while providing student-athletes the opportunity to develop their skills. As the newest member of the Metro League, we are thrilled to venture to schools with vast fan bases and athletic traditions that have been around…well, longer than SAAS! We want to show our Cardinal Pride and hope that every one of you can get out to a game this fall to show your support and to show our new league partner schools why they agreed to allow SAAS to join them competitively. You can always find all matches on our Athletic Calendar, and our fall dates will be updated later in August. Go Cardinals!

NEW ADDITIONS TO OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM

Baseball and Girls Flag Football: Once SAAS was admitted to the Metro League, its leadership affirmed their support for SAAS, adding sports where feasible for our numbers and facility access. In the spring, we surveyed families to discern levels of participation and support for different sports. Baseball and Flag Football had high interest and, importantly, suggested the ability to field full teams.

SAAS has excellent access to baseball fields, thanks to the baseball diamonds at Seattle Parks Delridge Playfield and several other park locations. Girls Flag Football, being a winter club, benefits from the high availability of fields during that season. Furthermore, several full-time SAAS faculty members bring valuable head coaching experience at the high school level in both baseball and flag football, which is a significant advantage for any new program. Given the expressed interest, we are continuing to explore options regarding Boys Flag Football. Regarding a SAAS Football team, we are not actively considering adding this program at this time.

We recognize that baseball and Girls Fastpitch are commonly grouped together, and we want to ensure we provide diverse opportunities for all athletes. We plan to add fastpitch in 2026.  At the moment, there are no plans to add other sports beyond these in 2026. Still, we will continue to consider based on the degree of student interest, facilities, and Metro League availability.

Baseball Coaches: Max Bayern, who is on the faculty at SAAS as an Assistant Athletic Director will serve as Head Coach, if our request to add baseball is confirmed by the Metro League, Max played at the high school and collegiate level, and has coached at the college and high school levels, including in the Metro League at Seattle Prep.

Nick Manfreda will join the coaching staff as well; he is a full time Math teacher at SAAS, and served as Head Varsity baseball coach at Newark Academy on the East Coast, before coming to SAAS.

And joining the coaching staff is 11-year Major League veteran player and SAAS parent Jason Bay, a three time Major League All-Star, Silver Slugger Award winner, and MLB Rookie of the Year.

Athletic Trainer: This fall, SAAS welcomes our first in-house Athletic Trainer, Caitlin Brown. Originally from Northwest Indiana, Cait obtained her BS in Athletic Training from Purdue University. While at Purdue, she worked with their softball, tennis, soccer, and football teams. After graduating, she ventured to the University of Idaho, where she obtained her MS in Movement and Leisure Sciences. While at Idaho, she worked with women’s volleyball, tennis, and soccer teams. We are thrilled to have Cait join our team and share her wealth of knowledge and experience with our program and athletes!

SPORTS SEASON SHIFTS

Upper School Golf and Tennis: To align with Metro League schools, Girls Golf and Boys Tennis will be switching seasons. This shift will have both the Boys and Girls Golf programs play their regular season in the fall and the Boys and Girls Tennis programs play in the spring. The culminating state events for both Golf and Tennis remain in the spring.

6th Grade Volleyball: In an effort to provide ample space and opportunity for our popular Middle School Volleyball program, we will be moving 6th-grade volleyball to the spring and will compete in the CYO league. The 7th and 8th grade teams will remain in the fall. This adjustment allows a more robust match schedule, more teams, and the ability to keep team sizes to 12-14 athletes per. 6th-grade students continue to have the ability to participate in soccer or cross country in the fall or any number of SAAS after-school clubs.

2024-2025 SAAS Athletics offerings:

*New sport offerings highlighted above.

SAAS constantly seeks opportunities to enrich our program, and introducing new initiatives is a familiar process for us. Recently, we added Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Boys and Girls Wrestling, Music Production, Ethics Bowl, and Underwater Robotics. The insights gained from building these successful competitive programs have positively influenced our decision-making process.

We have an exciting year ahead for our entire athletic program, featuring new match-ups and emerging rivalries, all driven by our unwavering commitment to #SAASPride. We look forward to more announcements like this in the future and seeing you in the fall at a SAAS game.

As always, feel free to reach out with questions and feedback. Go Cardinals!
