SAAS Family Association October Newsletter

Our Purpose Statement

The SAAS Family Association strives to be an inclusive community that organizes activities for faculty, staff, students and their families. We support one another as we engage with SAAS to build a community of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging that empowers everyone to QUESTION, IMAGINECREATE, in order to CONTRIBUTE boldly to a changing world.

Family Association President's Message

Dear Fellow SAAS Parents and Guardians,

We hope you are settling into fall with ease. We want to briefly reflect on the first six weeks of school, recap past gatherings, and provide an overview of upcoming events and dates to hold on your calendar.

Thank you to all who attended the fall Family Association Kick-off Meeting on September 9 with our guest speaker, Giselle Furlonge. It is always fabulous to hear from Giselle, and she gave an engaging pop quiz on SAAS By-The-Numbers. We had a great turnout, and it was an evening full of lively conversations and enthusiastic parents and guardians ready to jump into action and engage in activities to further relationships with the SAAS community.

At the “Back-to-School Nights” earlier this fall, we felt the excitement in the packed halls as parents and guardians rushed to their students’ classes. We have much gratitude and appreciation for the faculty outlining their curriculum, expectations, and general tone for their classes. As parents, it is such a benefit to gain first-hand knowledge to improve communication with your teen about their classes and teachers.

Fallapalooza! The #SAASPride was alive and well at Fallapalooza, and it was amazing to see so many families cheering on our 6th – 12th graders at their games!  Thank you to all the parents who volunteered at the Family Association Logowear booth and who showed their support at this school-wide, fun-filled community event.

There are many upcoming Family Association events including:

  • October 9: Class Representative Training Meeting (Zoom Link Here)
  • October 15: Parent Education Panel and Discussion: Building Community & A Culture of Wellbeing - Supporting Teens at School & Home (in-person).
  • October 18: Friday Treats. The first of the year

For more information on these and other events, including grade-level specific events and more, read on here, check the SAAS calendar, and be sure to read your SAAS Friday Emails brought to you by SAAS Communications.

Thank you, parents and guardians of SAAS for your ongoing commitment to making SAAS a place of inclusion for everyone in our community and by supporting the school’s efforts by volunteering, providing treats, and participating in parent education events to further support our students and their growing needs.

Feel free to contact us at familyassociation@seattleacademy.org with any questions or comments throughout the year.

SAAS Middle School Commons (1137 13th Ave, Seattle 98122)

Are you curious about what’s really on your teen’s mind these days? How are they navigating friendships, stress, and the pressures of school? What themes come up in their conversations at school?

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage directly with key voices from our SAAS community! Join us in person for an insightful conversation with Giselle Furlonge, Associate Head of School; Leigh Hopkins, Director of Counseling; and Andrés Arteaga, Director of Equity and Inclusion. Moderated by SAAS parent and experienced facilitator, Deli Moussavi, this event will bring parents into the circle of support our teens rely on.

What we’ll dive into:

What’s on their minds? Explore the real-life issues students share with trusted adults at school, such as friendship dynamics, conflict resolution, anxiety, academic pressures, and more.

Building a toolkit for support. Learn actionable ways you can help your teen prioritize their well-being while handling challenges with resilience.

This isn’t just another talk. It’s about community building and a chance to connect, share, and leave with practical insights and a deeper understanding of how we can all foster our teens’ emotional and mental health.

We can’t wait to see you there for an interactive, insightful, and supportive evening that will equip you with ways to better support your teen, no matter what they’re facing. Come for dessert AND great conversation!
