Seattle Academy Onions Win Top Award at the 56th Annual Reno Jazz Festival

The Seattle Academy Choir, The Onions, directed by Mark Hoover, performed at the Reno Jazz Festival Showcase and Awards concert April 28 at Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. They won overall for Outstanding Performance of Vocal Ensemble for the second year in a row as well as winning their own high school division. Jaidyn Lam ‘18, Zach Santos Ufkes ‘18, and Sydney Grayson ‘20 were awarded as individual outstanding soloists.

Considered one of the best of its kind in the world, the Reno Jazz Festival has been hosting jazz superstars and the finest jazz students, educators and professional musicians in the nation since 1962.  With more than nine thousand students from ten states competing in three hundred choirs, bands, and combos from one hundred and seventy middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities, the competition is at a very high level.
