Seattle Academy Shines in First Metro League Season: State Finishes, Academic Triumphs, and Playoff Runs

Written by: Marc Moquin, Assistant Athletic Director

Last month, Seattle Academy wrapped up our first sports season as a member of the storied Metro League – a decades-old Washington athletic conference which includes 18 schools. Joining the League this fall meant jumping from a 1A classification, with a pool of small schools, to 3A, the second highest category of competition.

Here are the highlights of the season, including the Varsity Girls Cross Country team finishing 10th in the state and Girls Volleyball winning the State Academic Championship.

Cross Country

In cross country, the girls team qualified for the State Meet, where they finished 10th. The team of Ellie Candell ‘25, Reni Dadhia ‘26, Aspen Hoffman ’25, Alice Holtzen ’27, Sadie Honig ’25, Rhiannon Root ’25, Emmy Schindler ’27, Tyler Stiefel ’25, and Zoe Weingeist ’25 finished tenth in the State. Sadie earned Second-Team All-Conference.

On the boys’ side, Ramsey Mesiwala ’25 qualified for the State Meet.

Golf

In golf, both the boys (5-6 in the regular season) and the girls (4-7 in the regular season) teams qualified for the District Tournament.

The girls team consisted of Haven Bigatel ‘26, Phoebe Gandt ‘27, Ellie Iwen-Stelle ‘26, Kailey Karr ‘26, and Sydney Klein ‘28. The boys team consisted of Rylan Galante ‘26, Miles Yurcisin ‘27, Brooks Tappan ‘25, Zayn Pastakia, and Miles Stout ‘25. Rylan finished the highest and depending on the number of allocations, to be decided in the spring, may have qualified for the State Tournament in May. The girls will play in the District Tournament this spring.

Soccer

The Girls Soccer team finished 6-5-7 overall (4-4-7 in league play), qualified for the playoffs and fell one game short of the State Tournament, losing a tough 3-2 match to Roosevelt in the quarterfinals.

Individual honors went to Malea Carroll ’26, Maddie Maves ‘27, Isla McNae ’25, and Mollie Verhasselt ‘25, who were all named First-Team All-Metro. Addison Bay ’25, Molly Eamer ’25, and Eloise Maddox ‘26 were named to the Second-Team.

Volleyball

The Girls Volleyball team finished the season 12-2 in league play and 14-5 overall before being eliminated by Franklin 3-2 in the Metro Conference playoffs.

Individual honors went to Vivian Siebrecht ’25 who was named Metro Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Year, Avery McIntosh ’27 who was named First-Team All-Metro Conference, and Brenna Olson ’25 who was named to the Second-Team and Mia Cunningham ‘25 who received an Honorable Mention. The varsity volleyball team topped off the year by winning the State Academic Championship, an award given to the team with the highest GPA.

Ultimate

In ultimate, the boys squad finished the season 10-8 overall (6-5 in league) and won their first two playoff games before being eliminated.

SAAS also enjoyed great success on the middle school level with over 200 kids participating on seven soccer teams, four volleyball teams, and two cross country teams.

Congratulations to all the fall athletes, and Go Cardinals!
