Student-Athletes Off Campus: SAAS 8th Grader Wins Triple Gold at Canadian Junior Nationals

By Asha Dean, Director of Outreach for Student Experience

SAAS 8th grader Evie M. ’30 just wrapped an impressive 2026 campaign on the slopes. She won triple gold at the recent Canadian Junior Nationals in Stoneham, Quebec (March 20-21). Evie won the Big Air, Slopestyle, and Half-Pipe competitions in the Under-14 category.

Evie is a member of Club Freestyle Whistler and travels to Whistler almost every weekend to train. “I started skiing when I was three years old, and I've been competitively skiing since I was six years old,” Evie shared. Born in Squamish, BC, she spent her early childhood in Whistler. Her parents attribute their daughter's success to her commitment and precise execution in such a detail-oriented sport.

Evie’s area of expertise is freestyle skiing, the epitome of creativity on the slopes. It includes moguls, ski-cross, half-pipe, aerials, and slopestyle. While this dynamic feat on twin-tipped skis has been around since the early 1900s, it was not popularized until the 1960s, and the International Olympic Committee didn’t approve such competitions as part of the Winter Olympics until the 2014 Sochi Games.

Recently, Evie attended the 2026 Winter Games in Cortina to cheer on a friend competing in slope style snowboarding for the Australian Team.

“It was really fun, and a cool experience to witness our sport at the highest level,” she said.

Looking ahead, Evie plans to continue pushing herself as a skier, including training during summers in Australia. When asked about her own Olympic aspirations, she said: “It depends on how the next few years go, but competing on that stage is the goal.”
