Winter Sports Off to a Great Start as We Gear Up for the 25th Annual Basketball Mania
After a very exciting fall sports season, Seattle Academy looks forward to winter season which this year, besides basketball, includes wrestling and the club sports futsal, squash and Ultimate.
This winter a record two hundred and twenty five kids from both the Middle and Upper Schools turned out for basketball! The Cardinals have fielded sixteen teams, ten in Middle School and six in Upper School.
The varsity boys’ squad began their season last week with two victories on the road at Seattle Christian and at home against King’s Way Christian. They’ll next be in action tonight when they host Bush at 6:45 PM.
The defending Emerald City League champion varsity girls’ team also opened the season last week, also winning their first two games, winning a tournament at Friday Harbor island. The girls also host Bush tonight, tip-off at 5:15.
Added to this winter’s SAAS athletics calendar is the sport of wrestling. Led by SAAS English teacher Allen Stein, thirty kids, both boys and girls, from both the Middle and Upper Schools turned out for wrestling. Practicing in the Jaffe Room, the varsity wrestling team will have matches throughout the winter trimester.
The opening weeks of the season lead up to our big event of the winter, Seattle Academy’s annual Basketball Mania. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Basketball Mania. All sixteen teams will be in action. So please plan on making Basketball Mania a part of your holiday plans. Mark your calendars for this very special event which takes place on Friday, December 21. The first games start at noon, with the girls’ varsity tipping-off at 6:45 PM and the boys’ varsity at 8:15 PM. It is truly a community-wide event recognizing our winter athletes and celebrating our community prior to departing for the holiday season.
