Winter Sports Recap: Boys’ Varsity Basketball Goes Undefeated, Wrestling Offered

The Seattle Academy boys’ varsity basketball team had an incredible 2018-19 season, winning the Emerald City League (ECL) championship. They finishing undefeated in league, 12-0, and 18-2 overall.  The team advanced to the state tournament in Yakima before being eliminated. 

For the second year in a row Seattle Academy sophomore Leo DeBruhl was named All-ECL First Team, and this year he added the ECL’s Most Valuable Player Award. 

Also honored were sophomore Joe Cookson who, along with Leo, was named to the All-ECL First Team. Junior Teja Singh was named All-ECL Second Team, and freshman Logan Britt was named ECL Rookie-of-the-Year. Cardinals head coach Shaun Burl was named ECL Coach-of-the-Year.

The Seattle Academy girls’ varsity basketball team also had a great season, finishing second in the ECL this year with a 12-2 conference record (14-5 overall).  For the second straight year, junior Florette Cederstrand was name All-ECL First Team. Freshman Katie Drais joined Florette on the first team and was also named ECL Rookie-of-the-Year. The girls were eliminated at the District Tournament.

In wrestling, junior Leighton Cahoon became the first girl to participate in a varsity match, while senior Kel Chen advanced all the way to the state meet!
