Winter Sports Ends with ESC Championships and Academic Award

Girls Basketball Team Wins ESC;
Both Girls and Boys Wrestling Win ESC;
Girls Wrestling Team 1A Academic State Champions

The Seattle Academy boys and girls varsity basketball teams both wrapped up successful seasons and the SAAS girls wrestling team was honored by winning the State 1A Academic Award. 

On the middle school level, despite Covid restrictions, over 200 boys and girls enjoyed and successfully completed clinics, practices and skills challenges in bouldering, basketball, futsal and wrestling. 

Congratulations to all the athletes for a great winter season!  And… go Cardinals!

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Seattle Academy Upper School Girls Basketball Team 2022

In girls basketball, the Cardinals won the Emerald Sound League Championship finishing 9-1 in the league, and 18-5 overall, qualifying for the State Tournament before being eliminated by Wapato. 

For the second time in three years, senior Katie Drais was named the Emerald Sound Conference (ESC) league’s Most Valuable Player. Sophomore Ila Giblin was named All-ESC 1st-Team and head coach Joel DeBruhl named Emerald Sound Conference Coach-of-the-Year.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Seattle Academy Upper School Boys and Girls Basketball Teams 2022

In boys hoops, SAAS finished third in the ESC qualifying for the State Tournament after reaching the finals of the ESC league tournament. The boys won their regional State game defeating Eatonville, 71-53, before falling to Annie Wright in a hard-fought game. Senior Logan Britt was named First-Team All-League and was also named to the WIBCA All-State Team.

WRESTLING

In wrestling, both the boys and girls wrestling teams won the Emerald Sound Conference. Five boys — Jackson David '24, Owen Draper '22, Trtl Lee '23, Jonah Rudin '23 and Jaden McCleery-Brown '22 — along with one girl, Farah Melang '23, all earned First-Team All-ESC. 

Three individuals won league championships — Trtl Lee, Owen Draper and Farah Melang — and three individuals won sub-regional championships: Trtl Lee, Jackson David and Jaden McCleery-Brown. Trtl, Jackson and Owen all qualified for the Mat Classic in Tacoma (State Tournament). Head coach Martin Brakke was named girls Emerald Sound Conference Coach-of-the-Year.
