Model United Nations
Seattle Academy Model United Nations (MUN) offers students opportunities to simulate countries, organizations, or individuals in a highly collaborative and competitive environment with students from across the area, state, nation, and even the world. The academic team will attend 6-8 conferences a year, and students may choose to attend as their schedule permits. Some students might have a trimester in which a sport or extracurricular is pretty demanding. That’s okay! Students may attend conferences as they are able throughout the year.
Unsurprisingly, characterizations of MUN in popular culture are a bit off. In reality, Finland would not trade their military to Kenya for 50 lions (Parks and Recreation), and Equatorial Guinea would not nuke the United States in retaliation for an indiscretion outside of committee (Never Have I Ever). The goal is to exercise your creativity within the reasonable bounds of your assigned identity, and delegates will need to represent views that don’t necessarily align with their own. On this point, MUN develops empathy and a richer understanding of the barriers that inhibit multilateral solutions to global problems. Nevertheless, the most successful delegates and those who win awards will work within these limitations to solve problems. Viewing a problem from an outside angle and working with stakeholders who share differing positions is a prerequisite for successful resolutions in MUN and life.
