Athletics Philosophy & Leadership

Seattle Academy Athletics: Statement of Philosophy

At Seattle Academy, athletics serve as an essential extension of the school’s mission, offering students meaningful opportunities to cultivate confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. Whether a student is new to a sport or competing at an advanced level, SAAS Athletics aims to create inclusive environments in which students feel a strong sense of belonging while being appropriately challenged to grow.

We value effort, commitment, and character as highly as competitive outcomes, and we expect our teams to compete with integrity, respect, and joy.

In the Upper School, this commitment is reflected in a thoughtful balance between broad participation and excellence. As a member of the WIAA and the Metro League, SAAS is committed to providing developmentally appropriate and competitive athletic experiences that support student growth.

While not all teams are no-cut, we remain dedicated to ensuring that every student interested in athletics has an opportunity to participate through designated no-cut sports each season, expanded junior varsity offerings, and a growing range of club and fitness-based programs. Team placement is designed to promote skill development, meaningful competition, and cohesive team experiences that honor both individual readiness and collective goals.

In Middle School, broad participation and developmental growth are central to our athletic philosophy. Students are encouraged to explore athletics at a level that meets them where they are, fostering confidence, skill development, and a lifelong connection to physical activity.

Across all divisions, Seattle Academy Athletics is grounded in trust, respect, and responsibility—to teammates, coaches, officials, and oneself. Our goal is not only to build strong teams, but also to develop thoughtful competitors and engaged community members who carry the lessons of athletics well beyond the field of play.

Coach Preparation, Training, and Accountability

Seattle Academy is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and developmentally sound athletic environment for all student-athletes. All SAAS coaches participate in ongoing training and professional development as a condition of employment, aligned with school expectations as well as league and governing body requirements. These trainings span multiple areas, including legal and ethical responsibilities, health and safety, equity and inclusion, and the social-emotional well being of students.

Depending on the sport and league affiliation, coaches complete annual and recurring certifications, including rules and sport-specific clinics, concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest awareness, First Aid/CPR, and coach education programs. Many coaches also engage in trainings focused on athlete safety, abuse prevention, cultural competency, implicit bias, and coach-athlete boundaries. Certain sports require additional certifications or specialized credentials to ensure technical safety and best practices. Through this comprehensive approach, SAAS ensures that all coaches are prepared not only to teach skills and strategy, but also to model professionalism, care, and leadership in service of the whole student.
