Seattle Challenge

The Seattle Challenge is a three-day capstone event designed for 8th-grade students at Seattle Academy. This experience fosters deliberate exploration of self-identity and community engagement through various activities focused on service and reflection. Our goal is to understand how others live in our urban environment, identify community needs, recognize those addressing these needs, and discover how we can contribute both individually and collectively.

We plan to accomplish this goal by:

  • Engaging in the life of our community.
  • Acting in small and big ways.
  • Connecting with community organizations actively addressing local needs.
  • Participating in meaningful actions and reflective practices.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: First launched over 30 years ago, the Seattle Challenge remains a pivotal part of the Middle School experience at Seattle Academy. Though the program has evolved over the years, its core mission—to build independence, foster community awareness, and emphasize mutual reliance—has remained unchanged.

PROGRAM GOALS: Throughout this experience, we emphasize guiding students in how to think, not what to think. We support students in reaching their own conclusions about how to address socioeconomic inequity. Our job is to help them understand the magnitude and complexity of these issues and to aid them in learning to use their voices on behalf of their convictions.

LOGISTICS: Participation in the Seattle Challenge is required for all 8th-grade students. Regular classes will be suspended during these days to ensure that students and teachers can fully engage in the experience. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student(s) ability to participate, please contact Ginnie Crawford, Dean of Students, 8th Grade.
