Outside the Classroom at SAAS

At Seattle Academy, we believe learning extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom. Whether it’s a trail in the wilderness, a downtown theater, or a conference room full of experts, the broader world is an essential part of the SAAS experience.

Beginning in 6th grade and continuing through senior year, students take part in off-campus learning opportunities that foster discovery, reflection, and connection. These experiences build confidence, open new perspectives, and create meaningful links between classroom learning and the world around them.

Field Trips: Learning in Context

Our students regularly venture into the greater Seattle community through thoughtfully designed field trips. These experiences are deeply connected to subject matter, service learning, and community building.

  • Field trips are scheduled during the school day so all students can participate.
  • They provide opportunities to connect concepts taught in school with real-world examples.
  • Students learn to navigate new settings, meet professionals in relevant fields, and apply problem-solving in authentic ways.

Whether students are visiting a museum to complement their humanities curriculum, working with local scientists, or engaging in a civic dialogue, these experiences deepen their understanding and spark curiosity.

Grade-Level Retreats: Building Community

Each grade level participates in a retreat that is tailored to their developmental stage and cohort needs.
Examples include:

  • 7th Grade Retreat to Camp Orkila—focused on community, collaboration, and exploration.
  • 9th Grade Odyssey—a three-day backpacking experience where students build independence and reflect on their transition into Upper School.

These retreats offer extended time abroad from campus, helping students step out of their routines, build peer relationships, and reflect on their personal growth.

Connecting with Experts in the Field

We create pathways for students to learn from professionals and experts in a range of fields:

  • Guest Speakers at community meetings bring first-hand perspectives into school conversations.
  • Student Presentations to panels of professionals offer real feedback and authentic audience engagement.
  • Field-based Learning allows students to ask questions and explore complex topics with guidance from those working in the field.

These experiences help students see the relevance of their studies and inspire future pathways.
