Seattle Academy 2019 Summer Program

Academic Camps:

Intro to Middle School - WAIT LIST ONLY

Teacher: Megan Roberts 
Dates: July 22-26 
Times: 8 AM – Noon
Location: Middle School Building
Tuition: $350
Enrollment: Minimum = 10; Maximum = 25
Description: Topics include:
•    Multiple tours of the school buildings
•    “People to know” profiles (including teachers, staff, and administration)
•    Socializing with new classmates
•    Organizing school supplies, notebook organization strategies, mastering combination locks, learning the block schedule, time management, and planners
•    Discussion of summer reading project
•    Academic computer use including keyboarding, Schoology, file management, internet searches, academic support sites, and email
•    Review sample assignments and discuss study strategies
•    Practice with locks and lockers

Arts Camps:

Black and White Photography Camp

Teacher: Rebekah Rocha
Dates: June 17-21
Times: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Arts Center
Tuition: $300
Enrollment: Minimum = 5; Maximum = 8
Description: Learn how to shoot, develop and print black and white film “Old School” style! In this intensive camp students will learn the basics of 35mm film camera operations, lighting, composition, exposure, chemistry, development and printing. Loaner cameras will be provided, or you can bring your own. Each day you will shoot film, develop it and enlarge prints in the darkroom. Beginners welcome, no experience necessary. Intermediate students can work to refine their skills and develop their passion for photography. At the end of the camp students will have a portfolio of work to take home!

Clay Camp

Teacher: Lily Hotchkiss and Annalise Olson 
Dates: June 17-21 and June 24-28
Times: 10 AM – 3 PM
Location:  Arts Center
Tuition:  $650 (includes $50 materials fee)
Enrollment: Minimum = 8; Maximum = 16
Description: Come explore and create with clay! Beginners and above welcome. We will be exploring themes of nature through clay, printmaking on clay, and form building. Students will have time to explore their individual projects as well as try the wheel.

Portfolio Camp (Upper School)

Teacher: Amanda Amsel 
Dates: June 24-28
Times: 10 AM – 3 PM
Location: Arts Center
Tuition: $325 (includes $50 materials fee)
Enrollment: Minimum = 10; Maximum = 18
Description: Let’s have fun creating in Art Portfolio Camp! Art Portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art and want to get a jump start for college prep, senior year, or build a body of work. This camp will give you the freedom to work independently but also guide you through skill building in drawing, painting, and design. We will be working from still life, models, working to complete past projects, and finding the missing holes in your portfolio. We will plan to see some art shows and galleries, use art journals to document our process, and photograph finished work. “A portfolio is a collection of your work, which shows how your skills and ideas have developed over a period of time. It demonstrates your creativity, personality, abilities and commitment, and helps us to evaluate your potential.”

Middle School Vocal Camp

Teacher: Mark Hoover 
Dates: June 17-21 
Times: 10 AM – 4 PM
Location: Arts Center
Tuition: $365 (includes $10 materials fee)
Enrollment: Minimum = 10; Maximum = 25
Description: Mark Hoover will offer a one-week intensive vocal music program for Middle School students. This high energy program will give students the opportunity to work on singing skills and learn a variety of vocal repertoire. Beginners will work on uncomplicated, fun music. Experienced singers will work on harmonizing within a more demanding repertoire. The camp will culminate in a vocal performance on Friday night. If you want to sing a solo, this is a great opportunity to start. If you want to just sing with others, come and give it a try!
Performance: Friday, June 21, at 7 PM in the Arts Center

Comedy! Comedy!

Teacher: Stone Soup Theatre
Dates: August 5-9
Times: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Arts Center
Tuition: $360
Enrollment: Minimum = 5; Maximum = 20
Description: This class utilizes very broad physical comedy, and teaches comical timing using scenes. Learn the power of parody, mastering over the top characters and engaging in outrageous situations. Explore improvisation, and give characters new life using your own sense of humor!
Performance: Friday, August 9, at 2 PM.
Requirements: Incoming 6th – 12th grade Seattle Academy students.

Hamilton

Teacher: Stone Soup Theatre 
Dates: August 12-16 
Times: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Arts Center
Tuition: $360
Enrollment: Minimum = 5; Maximum = 20
Description: The sung and rapped through musical about American founding father Alexander Hamilton will come to life with hip hop, rhythm and blues, soul, and pop music. This musical features extremely popular songs like “Alexander Hamilton” and “Guns and Ships.” Need we say more about this wildly popular musical. Students will learn three songs from Hamilton, and there will be an improvised script created by the group to tie the songs together. Costumes will be provided for a final day performance.
Performance: Friday, August 16, at 2 PM.
Requirements:  Incoming 6th – 12th grade Seattle Academy students.

Athletics Camps:

Volleyball

Teacher: Margie Young
Dates: June 17-20
Times: 1 - 4 PM

Enrollment: Minimum = 12; Maximum = 24
Description: This skills-based camp is designed for all levels of experience and will consist of a combination of fundamentals, game play, and strategy.

Basketball

Description: Seattle Academy is dedicated to offering quality basketball camps in which students can develop basketball specific skills, meet peers from the SAAS community, and most importantly, have an experience they will enjoy and remember. Coaches Shaun Burl and Joel DeBruhl were both experienced players at the college level and are now dedicated coaches here at Seattle Academy. Several of their current and past players will assist with the daily camps. Each day campers will learn ways to improve their game through drills, discussions, and live play. This camp is open to kids of all different skill levels. Campers will be divided by skill level and experience. We hope you will join us for some fun in the gym this summer!

Soccer

Dates: July 8-12 and July 15-19 
Times: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Middle School Gym
Tuition: $349 (optional $20 SAAS Sports Camp T-shirt)
Enrollment: Minimum = 10; Maximum = 60
Description: Get ready for a jam-packed week of SOCCER! At our full-day SAAS camp, students will play a variety of fun and exciting games that will help teach and develop player’s crucial soccer fundamentals and technique. Campers will experience fun and challenging drills in the morning, where the focus will be on building their skill set and gaining confidence. In the afternoon, students will enjoy traditional soccer and indoor soccer, including full games and tournaments. This camp is open to students of all skill and experience levels. Your child will come home happy, tired, and ready for more the next day, as well as being prepared for the next SAAS soccer season! Please note: Send your child with a full water bottle, shin guards, sunscreen, and cleats.

Sports

Description: SAAS Sports Campers will have the opportunity to play their favorite sports all week! Every day, campers will be able to experience a new sport, as well as an all-inclusive sports tournament to round out the fun week. Sports campers can look forward to playing Basketball, Soccer, Hockey, Volleyball, Tennis, Football, Lacrosse, & more! They will enjoy a fantastic week of coaching from experienced professionals in a supportive and encouraging community environment. All levels of experience are welcome. Campers will develop their skill-set, helping them have a leg up on the competition for their upcoming SAAS sports season. More importantly, they will develop strong teamwork, sportsmanship, and amazing camaraderie. We look forward to seeing you for an exhilarating and action packed week this summer!
